UKCAT: UK Clinical Aptitude Test
The UK Clinical Aptitude test (UKCAT) is an admission test used by Universities for selection of students wanting to study medicine and dentistry courses. It is run by the UKCAT Consortium in collaboration with Pearson VUE, a worldwide leader in computer-based testing. It is used in association with other admissions activities like the UCAS application and academic qualifications.
UKCAT: Format
The UKCAT is a 2 hour multiple-choice test and comprises of following subtests:
Verbal Reasoning
It evaluates the applicant’s ability to understand, interpret and conclude from the information presented in passages.

- Extended test time: 28 minutes
Quantitative Reasoning
It measures the numerical skills and abilities of the applicant.

- Extended test time: 31.5 minutes
Abstract Reasoning
It evaluates the use of convergent and divergent thinking to deduce relationships from information and identify patterns amongst abstract shapes and critically assess and generate hypotheses.

Decision Analysis
It evaluates the capability to make sound decisions and judgements using complex and ambiguous information.

Situational Judgement
It measures the capacity to understand real world situations and to identify critical factors and appropriate behaviour in dealing with them.

UKCAT: Scoring and Results
The Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Decision Analysis sections are marked on the number of correct answers an applicant gives. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers. Raw scores are obtained which are further converted to scale scores that range from 300 to 900. A total scale score is produced by summing individual scale scores of the four sections and ranges from 1200 to 3600.
Raw scores are expressed in band 1-4 with band 1 being the highest.
- Band 1: Indicates excellent level of performance
- Band 2: Indicates a good, solid level of performance
- Band 3: Indicates modest level of performance
- Band 4: Indicates low performance
When you leave the test centre you will be given a copy of your test result.
Test Day Essentials
You must take photographic identification proof along with you on the test day. It can be a current original signed passport or a current signed photocard driving license (full or provisional).
